To find out the Effectiveness, Appropriateness, Usefulness, etc. Of a Test there are Five Major Principles of Language Assessment.
FIVE MAJOR PRINCIPLES OF LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT
I) PRACTICALITY:- A test should be practical staying within budgetary limits that is it should not be extensively expensive . it should stay within the specified time that is it should be finished within fixed time. It should be relatively easy to administer. It should have a scoring or evaluation procedure that is specific and time efficient.
II) RELIABILITY:- A reliable test is one which is given same result when taken on two occasions. The directions or guidelines should be clear and have uniform rubrics. The test taker or the administrator should contain unambigious items or tasks.

III) VALIDITY:- It is the most complex part of an effective assessment or test. It is the most important or essential principle. A valid test measures exactly what it aims at. No irrelevant variables are measured. It involves performance that samples the tests criterion. It offers information that is useful , applicable and has information which is meaningful and logical. Validity is supported by a theoretical rationale or argument.
IV) AUTHENTICITY:- The fourth major principle of ESL Assessment is Authenticity. It is one which contains language that is as natural as possible .It has items which are not isolated it includes topics which are logical and interesting it provides some thematic organization to items its tasks are of real world.
V) Washback:- provides attest which is positively inspired what teachers teach and how it is taught .it inspires positively how and what is learnt by the learners .The learners can prepare the learners well. The learners can improve and develop their language skills and give proper feedback .It is formative in nature and provides conditions so that the learners give their best performance.
